What High-Achieving Women in Direct Sales Need to Know to Instill Belief in Others
Today we’re covering knowing what you’re up against when it comes to belief. It will leave you with so much hope!
Whether it’s someone brand new to your organization or it’s someone who’s been at this a while, just shy of experiencing that next breakthrough win.
Maybe it’s someone on your team that has stepped back a rank or two and yet she’s still in it. Ooh, that’s a tough one! I know. Things are just different now for her and that is difficult to come back from.
Regardless of the scenario, you need to know what you’re up against when it comes to helping others grow in their belief. You can help team members in each of these scenarios. Even those really difficult situations where they had a level of success but stepped back from it, for whatever reason, regardless of the circumstances.
They can come back and you can be the mentor to help them do it. And that is rewarding on a level like no other!
Ok, so let’s start with what belief is. It’s the trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something. The trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something.
I know you have this. You trust she can do it! You have faith and confidence not only in her but also in the opportunity that she can experience whatever crazy big dreams she can dream up!
But this means for your team members to believe in themselves they have to trust themselves. They have to trust that they can accomplish their goals.
Belief means they have to have faith in themselves and have faith that they can accomplish their next win, big or small.
Having belief means she has to have confidence in herself and the confidence that she can achieve the business success she’s after.
Well, how do you influence that? It sounds all up to her, doesn’t it?
It’s not! In fact, you are the perfect person to intervene in this belief process. Let me share how.
The one most powerful thing you can do is help her know that there is a belief cycle and encourage her to simply notice when she’s holding beliefs not aligned with her current goals.
How do you do that?
First, I’ll share what the belief cycle is. Then I’ll share what you need to know about beliefs. We’ll end with takeaways and the next steps for you.
The Belief Cycle for High-Achieving Women in Direct Sales
The belief cycle is four steps: Emotions direct our attention and focus. These emotions create a powerful response we know as feelings. These feelings turn into thoughts and these thoughts form our beliefs. So the cycle goes, emotions, feelings, thoughts, beliefs.
Did you know, our feelings are a choice. I need to dedicate an episode all on its own to this fact. Our feelings are a choice. Feelings turn to thoughts and thoughts form our beliefs. So knowing we can choose our feelings, that alone gives us a lot of power back.
To demonstrate this belief cycle, let’s use a real-world example and then a common business example you see with your team.
Real-world example. Let’s say you have a friend that really wants a romantic, loving relationship. Yet she believes she is unlovable or unworthy in some way, therefore she avoids getting close enough with anyone to actually have a romantic, loving relationship.
She keeps her distance, only allows others to get so close, and the relationship ends. She doesn’t get to experience what she truly wants, a romantic, loving relationship. She remains single.
Her belief is “See, I was right, I am unlovable and unworthy.” Her belief is reinforced.
Yet we see the chain of events, the circle of repetition reinforcing the emotions, feelings, thoughts, and beliefs.
Let’s use a business example you and your team members commonly see. Let’s use the example that you have a team member that creates an event, virtual or in-person, either one, it doesn’t matter.
She’s bringing people together. What she truly wants is for them to be moved and inspired in some way to make a decision that will enhance their life. This leads to a sale or someone that joins her organization.
She truly wants to help people and in turn, her business will grow. Yet deep down she believes she may never really have the success that is just for others. What does she avoid?
She avoids inviting certain people. She avoids following up with those she did invite. She avoids sharing during the event in a way that helps people to come to a purchasing decision. Not many, if anyone attends. It wasn’t an interactive, engaging experience. It ends with little to no sales.
Do you see how it’s a cycle and each one of these impacts the next? Emotions, feelings, thoughts, and then reinforcing beliefs. She walks away from the experience reinforced by her deep-seeded belief that success is simply not for her. Maybe the belief is buried and she hasn’t really even admitted it to herself yet.
Here’s What Direct Sales Leaders Need to Know About Instilling Belief in Others.
Beliefs will guide you whether they are aligned with your current goals or not. Yes. Beliefs will guide you whether they are aligned with your current goals or not.
Beliefs are tied to emotional memories. We have a lasting, unconscious lens that we see our current world through. In our two examples, the outcome of these perceived “failed” business events or perceived “failed” relationships holds space and weight.
They create an emotional memory bank. We have a lot of stored information that can hold us back and keep us stuck. Your team member recalls past events, experiences, and issues that happened with similar outcomes, and the belief is reinforced.
It’s called pattern matching. An event happened in the past and we adopted beliefs from it. A similar event is happening now and those beliefs come right along with it. It’s powerful.
On the flip side, this same emotional memory bank can serve us and help protect us. Recognizing patterns allows us to predict and expect what’s coming. Regarding life in general, this can be helpful in that we can protect ourselves from people, events, and situations that did not serve us in the past or maybe were even harmful.
Regarding business success, we can also be aware of patterns that are not aligned with our current goals.
We develop beliefs that can be contrary to our goals or we can also develop beliefs that truly help us.
What To Do as a High-Achieving Leader in Direct Sales When Mentoring Others
Here is where you come in as a mentor and coach. It’s simple. When there is a pattern that does not align with your team members’ goals, your role is to help break the cycle.
Your role is to help her see the pattern and intervene in a spot in the cycle that can be influenced. You’re going to come in at one or more points in the cycle. It’s not time-consuming. It’s a few powerful questions.
How is she feeling about a recent event or issue that did not go as planned or as she would have hoped?
What are her thoughts about the event or issue?
What belief is she holding onto that no longer serves her, that is not aligned with her current goal?
Help her be aware of what’s happening. Flip the belief upside down. If her belief, no longer serving her, is that this type and level of success is for others, help her flip it. “This success is for me.”
Almost always, she cannot see the pattern. It is significantly easier for you to see the pattern, the self-sabotage, the getting so close and then not following all the way through on actions to make forward, positive, business movement with a win.
Here are your takeaways and next steps:
- Beliefs will guide you whether they are aligned with your current goals or not.
- Start by asking her how she’s feeling about the event or issue.
- Next, ask her what her thoughts are about it. Often you don’t even need to ask this. When she’s sharing about her feelings, her thoughts will often come out. You’re listening for words that differentiate her feelings and emotions vs. thoughts.
- Ask her what she believed going into the event or before the issue arose. This can take some guiding by you. You’ll often here “Well, I hoped I would have more people attend.” Your response can be “Yes, but what did you believe going into it about how many people would show up?” Often times you’ll hear “Well, my last event was only 2.” Or “Well, I was skeptical, nervous, and unsure if anyone would really come .” Skeptical, nervous, and unsure, are feelings that will lead you to more information about her beliefs.
Are you still with me? Don’t overthink this. It is simple. Go back to the example about the girlfriend that wants a loving romantic relationship and you can read right through her self-sabotage.
Depending on how well you know this team member, maybe you can read it and maybe you need to ask some questions first. I caution you not to make assumptions.
Open-ended questions will give you all the information you need. Don’t go into it completely certain and predict you know how she’s feeling and what her beliefs are. If you discover your predictions are accurate, great. But stay open to letting her speak for herself and then take it from there.
Lastly, once she’s shared her beliefs, then you can pick one or more of the areas in the cycle, feelings, thoughts, and/or beliefs to break the cycle.
Her feelings are a choice. Once she decides how she wants to feel going forward her thoughts can support this.
Her beliefs can be turned upside down.
